Some so-called "knowledge" is more terrible than ignorance
Although knowledge is incredibly valuable, it also has its limitations.
First, knowledge itself is endless.
What do we mean by knowledge? It is our understanding and interpretation of the countless phenomena and truths within the world. Since the world is vast and ever-expanding, the amount of knowledge that can be discovered is also limitless.
Yet, the greatest challenge is that human life is limited.
As Zhuangzi once said: “Life is limited, while knowledge is infinite. To pursue infinite knowledge with a limited life is impossible.”
The world contains endless mysteries, but our time and energy are finite. If we spend our entire lives chasing every piece of information without direction, we may eventually exhaust ourselves without gaining true wisdom.
Knowledge becomes truly meaningful only when it is organized, understood, and connected into a system. Otherwise, it remains merely a collection of scattered fragments.
Some people may possess a vast amount of information, but without wisdom and discernment, knowledge alone cannot transform their lives.
The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once wrote an essay titled “Why I Am So Wise.” His conclusion was simple:
“The reason I am so wise is that I never waste my energy on unnecessary things.”
True wisdom is not about knowing everything. It is about understanding what truly matters and dedicating our limited time and energy to what has lasting value.
